2012: The Doctor Who Movie

And guess who's confirmed to play the good Doctor?

Johnny Fucking Depp.

This is like a fanboy's dream combined with a nightmare, because this is what Mr. Depp had to say about the part:

"The Doctor will absolutely have a serious romance. I can not reveal who my co-star is yet but I'm told she is a strong, lovely actress that everyone knows and is perfect for the part ... The Doc is always portrayed as this mysterious Demi-God. Russell has penned this wonderful, exciting script that humanizes this all-powerful alien. The Doctor is actually given a name in the film, I'm told he never really has one. He also acts like a Physician in more than just his title. He's called The Doctor for a reason. His mission is to journey through time and space with a crew of volunteers treating humanity's illnesses brought on by invading aliens. He cures the bubonic plague and then goes to Africa to fight Ebola. The film will be very human and relevant and have a great message."

The mystery of who the Doctor was before he started wandering the galaxy is a great source of stories and was especially played up during the last few years of the classic series.

Giving the Doctor a name nails him down. I don't suppose this prevents him from being Rassilon and/or Merlin, or the Creator of the Universe, but it just feels too concrete to me.

Perhaps someone will give him a name, rather than him revealing his own. That would actually fit in better with the whole Mystery Man angle, of a guy who's had so many identities he gets confused sometimes, himself.

Anyway, Depp is a wonderful actor and I'm looking forward to seeing the film, but there is a mantra playing in the back of my head which tempers my enthusiasm:

Tie-in movies usually suck.

You might want to disable your embarrassment circuits before you click play.

The YouTube page says this is from the Doctor who Audio Book "Doctor Who and the Pirates." Lyrics at the Youtube page, if you expand the description below the movie.

Why, Internet, Why?

I have discovered a blog that's new to me, Post-Modern Barney.

Mr. Barney is, among other things, both a comic-book and a Doctor Who nerd.

He is also merciless with the weirder aspects of heterosexuality.

And I love him for it (in a manly, heterosexual way of course).

So it is with little shame that I steal this gem from him:

The Shakespeare Connection

My folks have recently watched a 1980 BBC production of Hamlet starring, among others, Derek Jacobi as Hamlet, looking rather like Commander Riker,

Lalla Ward as Ophelia,

Whoops, sorry,

and Patrick Stewart (TV's General Sejanus) as Claudius (left):

I am sorry to have missed such a glorious sight as that wig on Patrick Stewart. He had a rather better one as Sejanus:

In the course of my perambulations about the Web today, I learn that thirty years later, Patrick Stewart is still playing Claudius, only this time Hamlet is being performed by David Tennant, late of Doctor Who:

Now, all of these actors, with the exception of Patrick Stewart, had larger or smaller roles in Doctor Who, Derek Jacobi only lately as the Master, and Stewart played some kind of role in some little-known knockoff of Star Trek or something, I'm not sure what. But anyway, not everyone who has trod the boards playing Shakespeare has had roles in scifi, but a lot of British scifi actors have trod the boards playing Shakespeare at some point. There's a paper in there, somewhere, but it probably shows that such actors are either actually good at what they do, or they have large egos. Beyond my pay grade, anyway.

It Is A Beautiful World

DALEK DREDGED FROM POND

This is just a wonderful headline.

The guy who discovered it was part of a cleaning crew trying to maintain some green space near Beaulieu, Hants (Hampshire).

“I’d just shifted a tree branch with my foot when I noticed something dark and round slowly coming up to the surface. I got the shock of my life when a Dalek head bobbed up in front of me."

I bet what he thought in the moment was Quick wheres a ---ing sofa mate!

Near as anyone can reckon, the Dalek was dumped in the pond during location filming in the 70s, during Pertwee's reign, or the 80s, during Colin Baker's stint. Odds are it's a Pertwee relic, seeing as there were three Pertwee "the Daleks" episodes (Day of, Planet of, and Death to) and one Colin Baker episode (Remembrance of the Daleks).

Tesla coils.

Doctor Who.

Oh. Yeah.

Twenty more words: Sorry about the funky disco backbeat and the screaming crowds. This performance was filmed at the Chattanooga Science Fiction Convention.

History of the World

Pharyngula has a wonderful embedded video that compresses the history of the Earth into 60 seconds. I'm afraid that I can't embed it here because it's a video from Seed Magazine and I don't have a subscription.

But I think you ought to go watch it anyway.

Start Making Next Christmas' Gifts Now

You'll need the time.

Via Nodwick, I have found the Doctor Who Scarf Site, a fan site with resources to support anyone who actually wants to knit one of Tom Baker's monster scarves. The author also has photos from his trip to Long Island, New York to view the original scarf that Baker wore in the first couple seasons of his seven-year tenure (Season 12, or L in some reference materials).

That's the pattern, there. In some of the photos he took in New York it's been patched in several places, so obviously its time as a piece of costumery was hard on it.

And the most amazing thing, I think, is that these have all been apparently kludged up from merely watching the shows in question and making notes. These are some serious cosplayers, here, folks, exercise caution.

Oh No, Not Again

Which sci-fi crew would you best fit in with? (pics)
created with QuizFarm.com
You scored as Heart of Gold (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

You are a light and humorous person. No one can help but to smile to your wit. Now if only the improbability drive would stop turning you into weird stuff.

Heart of Gold (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

94%

Babylon 5 (Babylon 5)

75%

Moya (Farscape)

75%

Millennium Falcon (Star Wars)

69%

Deep Space Nine (Star Trek)

69%

SG-1 (Stargate)

56%

Galactica (Battlestar: Galactica)

56%

Enterprise D (Star Trek)

56%

Serenity (Firefly)

50%

Andromeda Ascendant (Andromeda)

44%

FBI's X-Files Division (The X-Files)

38%

Bebop (Cowboy Bebop)

31%

Nebuchadnezzar (The Matrix)

31%

What, no Doctor Who? They put that Kevin Sorbo ego-train Andromeda on there, and they didn't add Doctor Who? Or Red Dwarf?

Come to think of it, I've got more quibbles from a purely sci-fi nerd standpoint about this quiz, but I won't bore you.

Yes, I love the old Heart of Gold crew, but I gotta say that picture up there is just as amusing. I love Ford (on the left) busting out the towel-ninja moves, and the citrus-powered thinking cap atop Zaphod's noggin (on the right).

Also, "You don't scare me. I'm British. I know how to queue!" is a wonderful line.

Hanx, Ma!
